Born: Concordia, Kansas
Resides: Little Rock, Arkansas
Family: Daughter Connie and son Gus. Husband Gus "Buddy" Blass died May 8, 2016 at age 92.
Patricia Blass and her late husband, Buddy, were partners in racing almost as long as they have been married. The couple, who would often come to Oaklawn Park when they were dating, were married 67 years and visited the winner’s circle nearly as long.
Blasses started racing with the late trainer Douglas M. Davis Jr. and after his death, formed a successful partnership with trainer Jinks Fires that has lasted over 30 years. Most recently, they had their runners with Donnie K. Von Hemel.
The couple campaigned such Oaklawn stakes winners as Fun Flight, Tricky Fun and Pink Shoes, one of many in their long line of stakes winning “Shoe” horses. Pink Shoes is the dam of the 2005 Martha Washington Stakes winner Isabell’s Shoes and fan-favorite Prom Shoes, the winner of the 2008 Fifth Season Stakes and 2009 Essex Handicap.
Buddy Blass, who often gives his wife horses as presents on special occasions, said one of their biggest thrills in racing was winning the 1973 Travers Stakes with Annihilate ‘Em. Still other top horses include Patsy’s Girl, Me and Connie and My friend Gus.
